You want to do the right thing. Eat locally and sustainably 12 months of the year. Easy enough in California, but you live in Vermont or Minnesota or even New York—where winter settles in early and leaves late.
As currently deployed, New York State’s 36,000 farms can supply perhaps 40% of local food needs, so unless all New York residents become victory gardeners overnight, we will continue to depend on food
imported from thousands of miles away.

After a stressful day working in the office at last I’ll be having my first vacation this week. I was so excited and very happy because for the first time this week I’ll be having my break and I will spend it with my family and my nephew.
When I was on my way back home, I saw a store selling different candies, sweets, cookies and chocolate. All of the kids like are there. A

Hello, all. Adriana is my Twitter Pal who invited me to join up with Brooklyn Food Coalition. Seeing that it is for people who serve Brooklyn....I do in a way. Each morning, milk trucks gather milk from farms in my area and head for NYC....maybe even Brooklyn. So we are very much connected through the NYC Foodshed that we all share. If anybody has anything they would like to see in the Foodshed or Milkshed, just drop me a note. Or, any questions, etc. I'd be happy to answer. In the meantime, jus…

Flatbush, Brooklyln NY: In a grossly misleading announcement, Brooklyn College trumpeted its plans to create a garden at Brooklyn College. In a media statement on CUNY’s newswire (
http://www1.cuny.edu/mu/forum/?p=6327) the college's PR department states, "A working garden on college grounds will provide our faculty and students with the opportunity to explore such important issues as health, nutrition, organic farming and sustainability practic…

I have been looking for a website that can give overall comparative, nutritional info. on particular products/brands. For ex., which granola bars are best for kids. I have found some sites but they seem brand-sponsored. Any ideas?
ALSO, as a new member of the PS Food Coop & a mother of 3, I am wondering what I really should be buying organic & why? Do I need to be buying organic granola bars or are the Quaker ones I can get at Stop & Shop for a dollar less…

This is SUPER exciting news! The city's Department of Health is
finally ending its 10-year ban on beekeeping within the city limits. Thanks to the work of Just Food, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, and the tons of New Yorkers who signed the petition and came to rallies and events around ending the ban, we made it happen. Hooray for us!

Ryan Kimura: "As a board member for the Slow Food Chicago chapter, I attended the gathering to learn how others have improved access to good food in low-income communities. For 2010, our chapter has been planning work in one particular “food desert” in the city, so it was stimulating to hear about similar projects and others’ experiences. Yet, the spiritual approach and racial undertones of the gathering shifted me out of my comfort zone. Social justice work is new to me, like it might be for ot…

I attended the Growing Food and Justice Gathering in Wisconsin a couple of weeks ago. It was an amazing experience. It was so inspiring to meet so many folks from around the country (and international) and learn about the work they do in their communities. I put together a video about the weekend, check it out and enjoy ;0)

Hi,
I'm a wood designer based in Brooklyn, NY. I've designed a portable chicken coop for backyard and urban farmers based on a British "Ark" design. My aim is to offer an affordable, space efficient coop made wholly with sustainable materials. I'm offering it at my web site for $499.00 including free delivery to your home.
The coop is ideal for 4 hens or 6 Bantams. It is predator-proof.

On October 29th, the Brooklyn Food Coalition hosted what might be the first-ever electoral debate dedicated to food policy. Three City Council hopefuls went on record with their vision for all things food (in schools, in under-served neighborhoods, food workers and more). One of the first food topics people hook into is school food, so what better setting than a school for this debate?
PS 10 is in an…

Some say the race for Bill de Blasio's council seat was run and won back in September when five white guys vied for the Democratic nomination. Four of them showed up at my door to ask me what I care about. Here it is October and my doorbell's silent, so maybe even the candidates believe that the Democrat has it in the bag. But, hey, in crazy times like these, who knows what will play out on November 3rd?
The Brooklyn Food Coalition has invited three candidates (Lander, Nardiello and Pechefsky)…

When I sat down to watch
Thirst (
trailer) a few days ago, I expected to emerge smarter, maybe a little shocked and charged for action. That did happen, but I didn’t know I’d fall in love with at least three people and even shed a tear. I kept seeing myself in the film. Sometimes I was a burly waste-water plant worker in Stockton. Sometimes I was a passionate and eloquent Bolivian activist. Sometimes I was an illiterat…
